چکیده

To support the need for interactive spatial analysis, it is often necessary to rethink the data structures and algorithms underpinning applications. This paper describes the development of an interactive environment in which a number of different Voronoi models of space can be manipulated together in real time, to (1) study their behaviour, (2) select appropriate models for specific analysis tasks and (3) to examine how choice of one model over another will affect the interpretation of data. The paper studies six specific Voronoi diagram variants: the Ordinary Voronoi Diagram, the Farthest-point Voronoi Diagram, the Order-k Voronoi Diagram, the Ordered Order-k Voronoi Diagram, the k Nearest-point Voronoi Diagram and the Multiplicatively Weighted Voronoi Diagram, and develops algorithms and data structures to store, rebuild and query these variants. From this, a generalised Voronoi data structure is proposed, from which specific Voronoi variants can be reconstructed dynamically as required. Algorithms for diagram reconstruction and for querying neighbourhood (topology or adjacency relations) of generator points and Voronoi regions are presented. An application program, developed on these ideas, is used to generate example results as proof of concept. It may be downloaded from a supporting website.

Interactive Analysis Using Voronoi Diagrams: Algorithms to Support Dynamic Update from a Generic Triangle-based Data Structure

This paper describes a series of dynamic update methods that can be applied to a family of Voronoi diagram types, so that changes can be updated incrementally, without the usual recourse to complete reconstruction of their underlying data structure. More efficient incremental update methods are described for the ordinary Voronoi diagram, the farthest-point Voronoi diagram, the order-k Voronoi d...

Dynamic Spatial Data Structures - the Voronoi Approach

Voronoi diagrams have recently received attention as data structures containing significant information about the spatial adjacency of map objects. Despite their theoretical efficiency, batch construction techniques require complete rebuilding after each modification. Incremental Voronoi creation methods use processes such as insert, delete and move for points, and from these derive insertion a...

Advantages of the Voronoi Spatial Model

In an attempt to escape some of the limitations of traditional GIS data structures, the Voronoi diagram was selected as an attractive alternative. It is a space-filling topological structure, eliminating problems of the line-intersection spatial model. It has been extensively studied by experts in computational geometry. Various versions have been developed in differing dimensions and metrics, ...

Efficient Computation of Discrete Voronoi Diagram and Homotopy-Preserving Simplified Medial Axis of a 3D Polyhedron

AVNEESH SUD: Efficient Computation of Discrete Voronoi Diagram and Homotopy-Preserving Simplified Medial Axis of a 3D Polyhedron. (Under the direction of Dinesh Manocha.) The Voronoi diagram is a fundamental geometric data structure and has been well studied in computational geometry and related areas. A Voronoi diagram defined using the Euclidean distance metric is also closely related to the ...

Generating and updating multiplicatively weighted Voronoi diagrams for point, line and polygon features in GIS

A Voronoi diagram is an interdisciplinary concept that has been applied to many fields. In geographic information systems (GIS), existing capabilities for generating Voronoi diagrams normally focus on ordinary (not weighted) point (not linear or area) features. For better integration of Voronoi diagram models and GIS, a raster-based approach is developed, and implemented seamlessly as an ArcGIS...
